What is Sacred Geometry?
In theory, Sacred Geometry means anything “that is necessary”. In application, it is the simple task of creating a circle with a compass. Then making another circle by placing the compass on the first circle. Then, wherever two lines meet, making a circle on that point.
The resulting pattern is the foundational pattern of our universe. In these mandalas, I follow the basic pattern and then I begin to create my own patterns and shapes.
I carve into the wood at varying depths and unique textures. Then I oil paint the walnut or poplar panel. Finally, I put on the metal leaf. Once the panel is relief carved, painted and leafed, I make the frame out of poplar or walnut wood. Oil paint the frame and then metal leaf the frame. So both the image and frame go through the exact process.
Poplar and walnut are the woods I mostly use, as they are the wood panels Leonardo Da Vinci, Botticelli, and other Florentine masters used to paint on. Florence is on the 39th parallel and so is Lancaster. We have lots of poplar and walnut, it is “a mano” (at hand).
